Building Your Own DIY Solar Panels

With the increasing demand for alternative energy sources, more and more homeowners are considering using solar panels at home. That, and the immense lure of saving on power bills prompts people to consider turning to solar energy for everyday needs. But what exactly is involved in manufacturing your own solar system? Are there any difficulties or is this a simple matter? Here are some factors to consider when learning how to build a solar panel.

Pay attention to the planning and preparation stages first. Take this time to take into consideration the time and space it would take to build each panel. Prepare a workplace and set a time period for your project. Take note of all the tools you will be needing. An ideal workplace should have enough power outlets to give you access to power you need in soldering the units together and good ventilation to whisk away the fumes.

Start small. If this is your first time going about building your own solar panels, consider doing a project for one or two at first. Take this first DIY solar panels project of yours and use it as a chance to learn. Experience is still the best teacher so only by doing will you get better at putting up your own solar panels.

Once you're really decided on the DIY course, take note of where you'll be buying your solar cells. There are many vendors over the internet you can turn to so getting your hands on those cells should be easy. If you want to a bit of practice first though, opt for solar cells from broken panels. These will require more work to put together but they are cheaper and still functional so they are great for first-time builders to experiment on.

Don't forget your panels will also need protection so look for tempered glass or plexiglass. Plexiglass that are UV-resistant will extend the life of your solar panels as discoloration is reduced. Protection from UV rays also helps keep solar panels efficient in absorbing energy from the sun so they keep working longer.

For your base, plywood is a good option but you can choose between using either wood or metal. Whatever you choose, you still need UV resistant paint to seal the base to keep dirt out of the panels.

Using DIY solar panels is a great way to do your part for the environment. With materials that are very easy to procure over the internet, there should be no reason why you can't turn to solar energy for your needs.
How To Get Started

The best way is to get a good instruction manual and some videos that will guide you step by step through the whole procedure. Here you will also get the best advice on what to buy and where to buy the required components at the best possible price.

Build Your Own Solar Panels

As conventional sources of energy become more expensive and unsustainable, more and more homeowners are turning to renewable energy to help power their home. Renewable energy is generated from natural resources that are instantly renewed and its consumption doesn't adversely affect the environment. Building solar panels are one of the best options available to help you generate renewable energy in your home.

Instead of buying commercial panels, DIY solar panels are more affordable and simple enough to construct with a good set of detailed plans and step-by-step instructions. The tools and materials needed to construct the panels include solar plates, photovoltaic or solar cells, a semi conductor block, inverter, conductor wires and a battery pack. These components are easily constructed and readily available at affordable prices.

There are 5 main steps to build your own solar panels, with a brief overview you will see just how easy it can be to generate solar energy in your home.
Step 1 - Construct the solar plates

The solar plates are the basis of your the main panel, this includes the solar cells, cement base to keep the cells at a safe temperature and a sheet of glass to protect the solar cells from weathering. The photovoltaic cells, or solar cells, absorb energy from direct sunlight. This direct sunlight has the potential to heat the solar cells to very high temperatures. This is why a layer of cement is added to the solar plate to keep the cells at a safe level to avoid any heat damage.

Step 2 - Connect conductor wires to link the cells

Each end of the solar cells should be connected by conductor wires to feed to the semiconductor block. This is how each solar cell is connected to create a working build it yourself solar panel. The solar energy captured in each individual solar cell is send through the conductor wires to a central location in the semi conductor block. From there the energy is able to be uniformly sent to your battery banks where it can be stored or sent to your inverter to be used in the home.
Step 3 - Install the solar panels

Where you decide to locate your build it yourself solar panels is just as important as ensuring the initial construction is done correctly. You need to find the best location around your home where your panels will receive the maximum amount of full sunlight throughout the day. This is why you see so many solar panels located on the roof of houses. Another idea is to construct a tall mounting pole in your garden or backyard to mount your build it yourself solar panels in a high location, but ensure that it will be kept out of the shade of overhanging trees.

Step 4 - Connect the inverter

The final stage in generating electricity from solar energy is by connecting an inverter to your battery kit. This is how the solar energy collected from your build it yourself solar panels is converted into the correct current to be fed directly into your homes power grid. The solar energy generated from your solar panels is fed through to your inverter as a direct current (DC), this needs to be converted into the alternating current (AC) that your home runs on.

Step 5 - Connect the battery

The battery is used to offload any unused electricity that is generated from your build it yourself solar panels. This excess energy can be kept in reserve for power outages or camping trips. You may not necessarily need to keep reserves of your solar energy as you may be able to contract with your current energy provider to pay you to feed your unused power back into the main power grid.

As you can see with a basic understanding of each of the components involved with build it yourself solar panels and how these components work together to capture and generate energy, it isn't necessarily a difficult or overcomplicated process. Of course, it is highly recommended you invest in a good detailed guide and further your understanding of the construction process and the technology involved before you go ahead and build your own solar panel.

Build Your Own Solar Panels

If you are planning to build your own solar panels, you will need to pull several building permits and possible have a professional engineer come in to approve of the project. The professional engineer will look at the roof structure and inspect its weight and load. There are grid-intertie policies in place with your utility so check in with them. Most allow you to tie into the grid, some don't, and some make you take out a one million dollar insurance policy.

Check with your local solar installers. Some will be willing to help you out for free. Most solar installers have people in place that specialize in pulling building permits and electricians.

A big decision when you are installing the system is what type of inverter you purchase. A micro-inverter system allows you to scale up slowly because they are attached individually to each new solar panel. Buying too large of an inverter and having a small number of solar panels means that your panels will not be operating to optimum efficiency. Depending on where you live, each step may require inspection.

Cash and IRS tax rebates may be retiring next year, so get into the action as soon as possible. There are many incentives in place at both the state and federal level to help you subsidize your solar system. Some states are much more incented than others to offer rebates. Some states on the other hand, are in default and are flat broke. Also put in some research on whether your utility offers a generous net metering program. Some utilities sell electricity to you at retail prices and buy from you at wholesale prices. Rebates in some areas are being cu back in order to spread the dollars across more installations. The federal tax credit is slate to run until 2016 so no point worrying about that for now.

Often the most difficult part is identifying the underlying structure of the roof in the installation process and attached the mounting rack.
